#1 Queen Calafia's Island- Newly Inhabited
Inspired by the rich, pre-colonial legacy of the First Peoples—Miwok, Nisenan, and other indigenous nations—this residence celebrates traditions of storytelling, land stewardship, and spiritual artistry.
The unit’s namesake, Queen Calafia, originates from 16th-century Spanish literature, described as a powerful Black Amazon queen ruling over an island of gold. Though fictional, Califia was embraced as a symbolic matriarch when early European explorers likened the wild western territory to her mythical realm, giving California its name.
Today, Calafia stands as an icon of feminist power and indigenous reclamation. This unit incorporates woven textiles, fixtures and installations composed of nature-based elements, finishes, and materials that reflect the enduring traditions and artisanal legacy of California’s First People.
